The Toyota company withdrew more than 8 million cars and trucks around the world from November 2009 to the first quarter of 2010, due to various defects, and stopped the production and sale process for a period of time until its image was cleared to consumers.

American Sales Director was questioned by Congressional Oversight and Investigation Committees on 23 February 2010 to find out why the company had withdrawn the massive number of cars in the United States.On 24 February of the same year, Akio Toyoda, CEO of the company, was summoned to testify before the committees. On 6 April, the U.S. government demanded that Toyota pay a fine of $16,375 million for failing to notify the Highway Traffic Safety Administration of defects that resulted in their products threatening people's lives. On 18 May, the company paid the aforementioned fine without admitting that it was wrong.
